Storytelling That Sticks
Turn Ordinary into Extraordinary
Hey Creators,
Capturing and holding attention through storytelling is one of the most powerful skills you can learn.
While storytelling often involves significant life events, it's possible to craft meaningful narratives from everyday experiences.
How can we learn to do this?
In his book Storyworthy, Matthew Dicks, a bestselling novelist and 36-time Moth StorySlam winner, suggests a daily reflection exercise. At the end of each day, spend five minutes reflecting on a significant or insignificant event, and consider how it could be transformed into a compelling story.
Learn the art of storytelling with this insightful book.
Many people don't have a structured way to reflect on and capture their daily experiences.
On Friday, I recorded an episode with Craig French, a former Shark Tank pilot, but we encountered several technical difficulties. Here's a breakdown:
Attempt 1: My camera froze.
Attempt 2: Craig had an echo.
Attempt 3: High winds caused a power outage.
As a professional podcaster, I expect technical issues to arise from time to time. If I were new to podcasting, these challenges might have discouraged me and made me doubt my abilities. However, reflecting on this experience allowed me to capture the moment and not let it define my journey.
This week on the ‘Social Dream Machine’, I'm chatting with the talented designer Yitian Cheng about the powerful impact of design on our everyday products.
We discuss common branding pitfalls:
Using stock images make you look generic
Inconsistent fonts and colors across channels
Thinking of design as an afterthought
